Pray, give in response to Red River flooding
Communities along the Red River in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota are bracing for potentially record-breaking flooding. The National Weather Service predicts that flooding could surpass those of the 1997 disaster. In many communities intensive sandbagging efforts are underway, and officials in Fargo, N.D., are working to raise the city's system of dikes. Fargo's mayor said the swollen river is moving into "uncharted territory," according to a CNN report.
You can give now to assist ELCA Disaster Response. Check or money orders can be sent to ELCA Disaster Response, Attn: US Flooding, PO Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694-1764. Please write "US Flooding/Red River" on your check's memo line. Credit card donations can be made by phone: 800.638.3522 or online.

Souper Bowl of Caring Raises $561 for Local Hunger Program
Temple Lutheran Church hosted a Souper Bowl of Caring event on February 1 to raise money for local hunger programs at the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County. A total of $561 was raised during a soup luncheon that included a voluntary offering. Included in this total is a $100 matching contribution from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
The event was festive and crowded with a variety of homemeade soups and desserts provided by members of Temple Lutheran Church. The offering was collected in two soup pots that reflected the two teams that were to play later that day in Super Bowl XLIII. The offering, which was in favor of the Pittsburgh Steelers, sucessfully predicted the winner of the NFL Championship, and marked a 2-0 record since introduced in 2008.
The event was sucessfully coordinated by Temple Lutheran Church members David and Gail Nichols.
The Life Center of Eastern Delaware County operates a daily feeding program where homeless residents and needy individuals and families within the community receive a hot dinner 365 days a year. Temple Lutheran Church provides all food and volunteers needed for the feeding program six times duing the year.

Sunday School Project Raises $2,500 to fight hunger
The children's Sunday School at Temple Lutheran Church raised a total of $2,525,50 during December & January through the "God's Global Barnyard" project. The children promoted a special offering during the holiday season to sponsor the purchase of animals such as cows, pigs, turkeys, chicks and fish farms that will be distributed around the world in order to break the cycle of hunger and extreme poverty. The "God's Global Barnyard" project was done in partnership with the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.
Thank you to everyone who supported this effort. A special "thank you" to the children who invited and challenged us to respond and the teachers that guided them and helped them learn about serving others.

Temple Lutheran to sponsor 2009 Kevin Cain Make My Day 5K
The congregation council of Temple Lutheran Church announces that Temple Lutheran will be the event sponsor for the 2009 Kevin Cain Make My Day 5K. This will be the second year that Temple Lutheran will sponsor this event, which takes place in the Brookline neighborhood of Havertown, including the street in front of our building.
The mission of the Kevin Cain Memorial Foundation is to help people living with cancer, as well as their families, by providing monetary relief for medicines and other items needed in their daily lives. The Kevin Cain Memorial Foundation was established in April 2006 in memory of Kevin Cain, who lost his courageous battle with cancer in June 2005. Kevin is remembered as someone who made a difference in the lives of others by coaching youth sports and volunteering his time for worthy causes. Despite his illness, he continued to coach and mentor children in the community. Kevin was and continues to be an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
The 2009 event is scheduled for Sunday, April 5th.
Below is video from the 2008 event.

Temple Lutheran Member Completes 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer
Temple Lutheran Church was excited to sponsor congregation member Ingrid Burd in the recent 3 day 60 mile walk raising support to fight breast cancer.
The congregation council received the following letter of appreciation from Ingrid after her successful completion of the walk:
Thank you for your support, I was thrilled to recieve such a generous donation. The actual contribution was posted the day after the walk, and it was exciting to know that the fight against cancer continued. The walk was absolutely WONDERFUL, definitely one of the best weekends of my life--full of laughter, tears, high fives, cold nights, sore muscles, windburn and inspiration. It was such an empowering experience and I truly believe we made a difference and provided HOPE for the future of cancer research, detection, treatment and recovery. Thank you again for your generosity.
Love, Ingrid
We give thanks to God for every way that we are given the opportunity to serve our neighbors, and celebrate the faithful response of disciples like Ingrid and everyone who supported her.

Haverford Township Day - Saturday - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Once again, Temple Lutheran Church will have a visible presence at Haverford Township Day, this Saturday, October 4th from 10am -3pm.
Parade participants should meet the group in the SuperFresh parking lot by 10:00am. The parade is scheduled to leave at 10:30. If you can be available for any period of time (half hour up to five hours) between 9am and 2pm, please contact Susan Osborne at (610)449-4359 or suzoo1@aol.com.
